Ten Songs We All Wish We Didn't Relate To … But We Do

MusicThe beautiful thing about music is that any song can mean the world to any person in any given moment.  Which means that, whether we want to or not, sometimes we can find meaning in a song when we don't really want to.

Here are ten songs that we can call relate to, even if we wish we couldn't.

Photograph - Nickelback
Hate for Nickelback is so mainstream now that it's crossed over into meme territory.  We get it, you hate Nickelback.  We hate Nickelback.  Everyone hates Nickelback.  Photograph is a corny song with corny lyrics, but:

Look at this photograph. Every time I do it makes me laugh. If I could I relive those days I know the one thing that would never change.

Forget for a moment that those words are coming out of Chad Kroeger's mouth.  Can you honestly say that you don't have pictures on your wall, in your phone or on your instagram that remind you of that time and make you laugh?  We thought not.  I guess Nickelback has a song for you… but we won't tell.

As Long As You Love Me - Justin Bieber
Oh no we didn't.  Are we seriously going to hit you with the news that you can relate to Nickelback and Justin Bieber in the same day?  Sorry friend, but it's true!  Have you been in love?  Do you remember how invincible that first flood of feelings made you?  Well:

As long as you love me we could be starving, we could be homeless, we could be broke.

If you haven't felt this way about someone then that is your loss, not Justin's fault.  It's time to face what Beliebers have known for years:  Justin Bieber has a song for you.

I Hate Everything About You - Three Days Grace
Three Days Grace, and all those early-2000s gravelly rock bands, are basically punchlines now.  But be honest, can you seriously say you've never related to the words:

I hate everything about you … why do I love you?

Sorry Mr. Too Cool For School, unless you've never experienced heartbreak then those words (and that song) are for you.

We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together - Taylor Swift
Yes, we know, it's not cool to like mainstream music and nothing is more mainstream than Taylor Swift.  But have you never been through a break up?  Have you never said to your best friends:

"I just... I mean this is exhausting, you know.  We are never getting back together.  Like, ever"

Of course you have.  Everyone has had a relationship where by the time it was all said and done we were more exhausted than we were heartbroken.  Taylor Swift has a song for you.

She Hates Me - Puddle of Mudd
Another of those early-2000s post-grunge bands (like Three Days Grace) whose name elicits giggles now, Puddle of Mudd's song She Hates Me still speaks to an angry form of unrequited love:

She f**kin hates me.  I tried too hard and she tore my feelings like I had none.

If you've ever tried your best to get someone to see the good in you and gotten nothing but heartache in return then, sorry, Puddle of Mudd has a song for you.

Complicated - Avril Lavigne
Avril wasn't a TOTAL punchline until she married Nickelback frontman Chad Kroeger.  Then everyone seemed to turn against her.  You don't hear people mention her breakout hit Complicated much anymore, unless it's in a derisive tone, but it did have this line:

Why do you have to go and make things so complicated?

Oh AND this line:

But you've become somebody else around everyone else.

Have you never had somebody try to complicate a relationship that was going perfectly well on its own (for example, try to turn a friendship into something more when you're not interested)?

Have you never known somebody who acts one way around you, but is completely different when they get around other people?

Yes, it's not complicated, Avril has a song for you.

Fall Out Boy's Dance, Dance was so overplayed that people started to resent it whenever it came on.  But it had this little nugget hidden in there:

These words are all I have so I write them. I need them just to get by.

For any of you who write poetry, keep diaries, have a blog or keep it real on twitter, then you know exactly how it feels to have nothing but the words on the page to get you through.  But it can also apply to someone pouring their heart out through text.  Yes, Fall Out Boy has a song for you.

Rockstar - Nickelback
They're back!  Avril's husband also sang these lyrics in Nickelback's hit song Rock Star:

I'll need a credit card that's got no limit, and a big black jet with a bedroom in it.

Uhhhh, hello, wouldn't we ALL want that?  Heck, wouldn't we ALL want to be rock stars?  There's nobody on this planet that can't find an aspect of desire in being rich and famous.  Sorry, Nickelback has ANOTHER song for you.

Just Like You - Three Days Grace
Blame Canada for NickelbackThis post has developed a real Canadian flavor.  Maybe every other country needs to institute a trade embargo on Canadian music to stamp out this menace?  Anyway, check out this lyric from Canadian band Three Days Grace:

You're wrong if you think that I'll be just like you.

We know we can't be the only ones who have looked at our parents and thought this before.  If you've ever had a parent or a teacher or an older sibling try to tell you how to live and thought "I don't want to grow up to be anything like you," then yes, Three Days Grace has a second song for you!

Break Stuff - Limp Bizkit
We know what you're thinking.  You think we've gone too far.  You think it was bad enough that we made you relate to Nickelback twice, but how could we possible force you to relate to Fred Durst et al?  Well:

Its just one of those days when you don't wanna wake up.

AND

Its all about the he says she says bullshit.

AND

I feel like sh*t so my suggestion is to keep your distance.

AND

No human contact ... Your best bet is to stay away.

If you've EVER had a bad day where you just want to lay in bed and not be bothered by the human race.  If you've ever been so fed up with people gossiping that you want to explode.  Then, yes my friend, Limp Bizkit has a song for you.

We'd love to hear from you guys on Twitter.  What are some other songs you relate to or that you think everyone can relate to?
